Jeff Pounder

Plein air oil paintings

Landscapes painted from life: California open country, coastal light, eucalyptus and oak, and the quiet hours when the light does the work.

About the artist

A lifetime of California light

I was born and raised in the 1950s in Arcadia, California, at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, and I think that is where my path to landscape painting really started. Weekend hikes up the canyons and streambeds were a welcome break from school, and my family spent a lot of weekends on my father's schooner over at Catalina Island, fishing and exploring the island on foot or rowing around in our dinghy. Nature was always close by, and I paid attention to it.

I had some inspiring art teachers in junior high and high school, which led me to more formal training at Orange Coast College, where I earned my AA degree. From there I put together a portfolio and was accepted to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena to study illustration. One of the high points was attending three off-campus workshops with the painter Dan McCaw. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Art Center in 1984.

After my training, I joined the San Gabriel Fine Arts Association and started entering my landscape work in juried shows. Winning a few awards, and selling a few paintings, was all the encouragement I needed to keep going. I have been painting the western landscape ever since.
